Townships Weather – Saturday, May 24th

Sneaky Hollow Lawn Sale Edition!

Well now, there ain't nothin’ more Township than a Saturday morning spent meandering through the hills and hollers, scouting garage sales and lawn-side treasures like you’re on some sort of junk-finding pilgrimage. And wouldn’t you know, Sneaky Hollow’s right there in the thick of it.

So go on, drag a chair up to the checkerboard table by the pot-bellied stove at Pine Knot General Store. Earl’ll pour you a lukewarm coffee, Daisey’ll hand you a muffin that’s seen better days, and Harold might try to sell you somethin’ he invented last night with duct tape and a blender motor.

But before you go haggling, let me tell you about the other place in Sneaky Hollow where you can find all manner of “antiques,” curiosities, and questionably functional appliances…

Pine Knot Lawn Sale Special

“Antiques” and Other Oddities in Sneaky Hollow

When Lawn Sale Season hits the Townships, most folks drag their old junk to the end of the driveway. But not Charmaine and Hollis. No sir. They’ve turned "collecting" junk into an art form and their yard into what can only be described as a cultural event.

Their place sits diagonal to Jean-Guy’s Filling Station, just across from the firehall-turned-pickleball-court and catty-corner to The Pine Knot General store, and let me tell you, it’s a sight to behold.

Charmaine’s yard is resplendent. Pink flamingos. Garden gnomes. A solar-powered, life-size plaster Sasquatch that lights up at night. And the full lineup of every car Hollis has owned since 1955—some with inspection stickers older than most of us.

More than once, a confused European tour bus has pulled over to snap photos, assuming they’ve stumbled on a national heritage site.

And it’s not just what you see—it’s the stories behind it. Like the 1955 mobile home leanin’ to the left, chimney patched with creosote thicker than Grandma’s oatmeal. Or the satellite dish that’s aimed directly at a birch tree. Art, really.

Now, Hollis is kin to Earl and Daisey, third cousins removed on his mother’s side or maybe twice returned on his daddy’s. Daisey puts it best:

“If they show up uninvited to your pig roast and know everyone’s name, they’re kin.”

Charmaine and Hollis don’t "host" lawn sales. They *buy* them out. If you’ve got a cracked margarine tub from Expo 67 or a broken lava lamp with character, odds are they’ll take it off your hands. Cash only. No receipts. No regrets.

Their ever-growing collection is affectionately known as the “Trailer Park Museum of Mildly Interesting Things.” The town council's tried for years to shut 'em down, but Hollis got ahead of 'em with a sign: ANTIQUES — Open Most Days.

Then went and got a secondhand business permit from a guy in Knowlton who used to sell garden gnomes out of a van.

And the best part? That sign might be about the merchandise… but the locals say it’s about Charmaine and Hollis themselves.

“We’ve outlived most of our receipts and three bylaws,” Hollis says with a grin.

So here's the Sneaky Hollow Scene This Weekend

Earl’s out front trading mismatched license plates.

Daisey’s baking day-old muffin bread—“best used as doorstops or dessert.” And Harold’s testing his new mosquito-blender hybrid contraption. (Results: pending. Safety: questionable.)

So if you see a ’64 Dodge Dart with a canoe on the roof and a plastic deer in the front seat… follow it. You might end up with a one-of-a-kind souvenir—or at least in the background of someone’s vacation photo labeled “Authentic Rural Quebec.”

The Pine Knot General Store Weather Forecast

Saturday

A stalled-out low pressure system is hunkered down like a cousin on your couch after Sunday dinner—won’t leave, and keeps bringing the rain. Expect periods of widespread showers, stubborn clouds, and an unseasonably cool high of 7°C.

Sunday

Things start lookin’ up! Rain tapers off to scattered showers. A bit of sun might peek through as temps warm to a more respectable 14°C.

Monday to Wednesday

Break out the sunscreen and rejoice, sunshine returns with dry, warm days between 21°C and 24°C Perfect weather for lawn sales, hammock naps, or cleaning out that shed you’ve been avoiding since 2004.

Thursday to Saturday

More showers likely as another system rolls in. Keep the umbrella handy—and maybe that tarp over the “antiques.”

Sunday

Back to sunshine and seasonal warmth. A fine day to sit on the porch, sip something cold, and watch the tourists take photos of Hollis’s lawn.

Stay dry, stay warm, and if you find yourself lost in Sneaky Hollow, just follow the smell of creosote and muffin bread. You’ll be right at home.

Weather brought to you by Pine Knot General Store, where the coffee’s hot(ish), and the forecast’s always full of character.

Have a great weekend!
